10 Web Design Mistakes That Are Costing You Conversions

The design errors behind most high bounce rates, and what to do about each one.

Slow mobile loading

People leave slow pages and the drop off compounds with every extra second. Most sites are tested on fast office connections and fail on a phone with average signal. Test on a real device on cellular data before assuming the site is fine.

No clear offer above the fold

A visitor should know what you do, who it is for, and what to do next without scrolling. Clever headlines that require explanation cost more conversions than they win.

Forms asking for too much

Every additional field reduces completions. Ask for what you need to make the first contact and collect the rest once a conversation has started.

Hidden pricing

Prospects who cannot find any indication of cost frequently leave rather than ask. A range, a starting point, or a worked example keeps the qualified ones and filters the rest before they take up a sales call.

Weak or missing social proof

Reviews, logos, and case studies belong next to the point of decision, not stranded on a separate testimonials page nobody visits. A specific review naming a result outperforms five generic ones saying the service was great. If you have numbers you are allowed to publish, use them, since specificity is what makes proof credible.

Navigation that hides the money pages

If a visitor needs three clicks to reach your pricing or contact page, most will not take them. Keep the paths that lead to revenue one click from anywhere, and be willing to drop menu items that exist for internal political reasons rather than because customers use them. Check the analytics before defending a menu item.

No obvious next step on the page

Every page should have one action it wants the visitor to take, and it should be visible without hunting. Pages offering four equally weighted options tend to produce fewer clicks on all of them than a page offering one, because choosing is work and most visitors will not do it. Decide what the page is for, make that action prominent, and demote everything else to secondary styling.

Everything above comes out of live client accounts rather than theory. If you would rather have it run on your business than read about it, we start with a free audit: two weeks, one channel, written findings that are yours to keep whether you hire us or not.

Common questions

Working with Wigital Marketing.

That is what the free audit is for. We look at your actual accounts and tell you which of these levers is available to you and roughly what it is worth, rather than recommending everything in the article. It takes two weeks and the written findings are yours whether you hire us or not.

We work with US businesses from established local operations through to national brands. The honest cut off is at the small end: if marketing spend is under a couple of thousand dollars a month, an agency fee eats too much of the budget and you are better served doing it in house with the guides on this blog.

We do not publish a rate card, because the same channel needs very different amounts of work at different revenue levels. Tell us your goals and what you are running now, we audit it, and you get a written quote priced against the scope your business actually needs.

No. Everything is month to month with no notice period and no exit fee. If we stop earning the work you should be able to leave the same week, and that constraint is deliberate.
